I grew up in a small town in central Maine and, following detours through Kenya, Mexico, and New York, now live in Amherst, Massachusetts. A strong interest in sense of place, plus many years of editorial work in book and magazine publishing, led me to found the new print literary magazine, The Common, based at Amherst College.
My nonfiction writing features books and literature, artists and writers, travel, and food. My short fiction has appeared in several literary journals, and I’m currently at work on a novel called The African Bazaar. I have an undergraduate degree in anthropology from Amherst College and will receive my MFA in fiction and literature from the Bennington Writing Seminars in June 2011. Starting in the fall of 2011, I will be a visiting lecturer at Amherst College.
