“For the Love of Olives: The Real Food People of Conway” (Edible Pioneer Valley, Fall 2009)
It’s the stuff of Hollywood movies and best-selling memoirs: family leaves the grind behind to live among the old world locals and ancient olive groves of the Italian countryside. In 2000, Amy-Louise Pfeffer and Michael Sola, along with their then-two-year-old daughter Marta, did just that, leaving stable jobs in New Haven for the town of Città della Pieve in the Orvieto Hills of Umbria where they opened a bed-and-breakfast and learned the trade of olive oil. Several years later they brought this most delicious Umbrian harvest to the Pioneer Valley.

We left behind everything—wives and children and low-slung dwellings—to make our fortune in this vast continent of darkness. Of savages and a few high-minded Britishers. We never intended to stay beyond the stint of our contract. In fact, only a few of us did. But these few carried on the tale of Tsavo, of what we poor souls endured. At what price the railroad was built and by whom.
